Accessibility Statement & Conformance
1. Statement of Commitment
Bookshope is dedicated to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We believe that physical bookcraft, typography, and bibliographic registers should be accessible to all readers, librarians, and archival researchers. We continually improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards to all public areas of bookshope.click.
2. Conformance Standards & Metrics
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. Bookshope is substantially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
Substantial conformance means that our catalog templates, specification matrices, forms, and navigation layers have been engineered and audited against Level AA success criteria, including contrast thresholds, keyboard accessibility, screen reader semantics, and focus management.
3. Technical Implementation Measures
Bookshope employs specific front-end practices across every template to ensure consistent assistive technology operation:
- Keyboard Operability: All interactive elements, including the corner navigation mark, full-screen menu drawer, edition lookup tool, and inquiry forms, are fully navigable via standard Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, and Escape keys.
- Skip Navigation: A direct skip-to-content mechanism is embedded as the first DOM element on every page, allowing keyboard users to bypass header furniture.
- Reduced Motion Support: The site respects the
prefers-reduced-motion: reducesystem preference. Under reduced motion, self-drawing SVG paths are rendered static and fully drawn, 3D Canvas initialization is suspended, and CSS transitions collapse to instantaneous state changes. - Semantic Hierarchy: Exactly one
<h1>element per page, followed by an unbroken heading ladder (h2, h3). Descriptive aria labels are provided on all icon controls. - Non-Text Content: All photographic plates feature contextual alt attributes describing binding materials, paper textures, and book anatomy. Purely decorative elements carry
aria-hidden="true".
4. Assistive Technology Compatibility
Our static catalog architecture has been tested for compatibility with contemporary assistive technologies and major browser engines:
Testing environments include NVDA with Mozilla Firefox on Windows, VoiceOver with Safari on macOS and iOS, and TalkBack with Chrome on Android. The catalog utilizes standard HTML5 landmark elements (<header>, <main>, <nav>, <footer>, <aside>) to allow effortless landmark jumping.
5. Known Limitations & Alternative Access
While we strive for comprehensive accessibility, certain historical and specialized architectural elements possess constraints:
The optional turnable 3D book object on the home page provides a tactile visual preview. For visitors who cannot interact with WebGL canvases, a high-resolution photographic still image is permanently rendered in the DOM with full descriptive alt text. The complete bibliographic specifications (binding, mill, trim, weight) are duplicated in standard tabular text beneath the stage.
Should any visitor encounter difficulty accessing catalog details, volume dimensions, or quotation forms, our Project Manager will provide immediate assistance, telephone reading of specifications, or accessible plain-text catalog manifests via email.
6. Feedback & Remediation Process
We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of Bookshope. Please let us know if you encounter accessibility barriers on bookshope.click:
We investigate accessibility reports promptly and implement technical remediations in our front-end stylesheets and markup within two business weeks of verification.
