Catalog Accession Ref: BKS-ATLAS-0150 • Edition of 150 Folios

Large-format cartographic collection in buckram spine.

Cartographic Midwest 1880–1940 compiles twenty-eight fold-out regional railway, canal, and geological survey charts, printed in high-fidelity lithography and sewn onto broad linen tapes to open flat across an archival table.

Acquisition Basis: Inquiry estimate $210 per archival buckram volume; numbered limitation of 150 copies.

Examine.

A standard glued binding snaps its spine when forced to hold oversized multi-fold map plates. In this edition, every fold-out plate is mounted to an archival Japanese linen hinge that wraps completely around the signature fold. When unfolded, the plate extends up to 880 millimetres (34.6 inches) wide without pinching into the gutter.

The binding construction relies on four 18 mm unbleached flax tapes running across the spine. The linen threads pass through each signature and securely lock around these tapes, creating a supple hinge that withstands decades of opening without paper fatigue or hinge tearing.

Since 2021, our Project Manager has directed catalog operations, delivering 25 completed catalog projects for regional archives, university reading rooms, and corporate collections across North America.

We do not use synthetic hot-melt adhesives that dry out, crack, and cause signatures to drop out over winter heating seasons. Every glue applied to this folio is pH-neutral reversible wheat starch paste combined with archival EVA, meeting strict museum conservation standards.

Weigh.

At 3.4 kilograms and 440 millimetres in height, this volume will not fit into standard household bookcases. It is designed specifically for flat map cases, library catalog drawers, or an angled reading stand (such as our 1.8 kg Cast Brass Reading Stand).

Opening the three-panel fold-out plates requires a table clearance of at least one metre wide. If you require a pocket atlas or a hand-held guidebook, this volume is distinctly not engineered for that purpose.
