Exposed spine binding on Japanese mulberry paper.
Touch.
The paper of this poetry volume is handmade in Tokushima, Japan, from pure Kozo mulberry bark fibres. At 55 gsm, it possesses remarkable translucency: holding a page reveals the ghosted typography of the succeeding page like mist through winter branches. Yet despite its ethereal weight, mulberry bast fibres are exceptionally long, giving the sheet tear resistance superior to standard 100 gsm western wood pulp.
The three outer edges are left untrimmed, retaining the natural deckle formed when the wet paper slurry settled onto the papermaker’s bamboo screen. No knife has touched the paper edges.

Verify.
Bookshope maintains its workshop and cataloguer desk at 225 North Columbus Drive in downtown Chicago, Illinois. Since 2021, our Project Manager has completed 25 catalog and edition projects, handling fine press distributions and institutional acquisitions with verifiable provenance.
We do not sell print-on-demand books or machine-stapled chapbooks. Each copy of Winter Dialogues is hand-punched signature by signature on an awl cradle and stitched by hand with needle and silk thread right here in our Chicago atelier.
Acquire.
Ordering from our inquiry-only poetry register takes four straightforward steps:
- Manifest Inquiry: Provide your contact details and shipping address using the form below.
- Accession Hold: We assign an available edition number and confirm reservation status via email.
- Protective Packaging: The exposed silk spine is wrapped in archival glassine and laid flat inside a rigid cardboard preservation folder.
- Tracked Dispatch: Shipped with end-to-end tracking from Chicago.
Weigh.
Because this binding features an exposed spine without a protective bookcloth casing, the stitching threads are visible and vulnerable to abrasive contact. It is not intended to be shoved into a backpack beside pens and keys.
Mulberry paper responds to atmospheric humidity by expanding slightly; in very dry winter environments, the untrimmed deckle may curl gently upwards. This is a natural physical property of long vegetable bast fibres and is not a printing defect.
